Philosophy for Youth Classes

IRT Youth Classes Mission

To provide young people with high-quality, innovative theatrical training, taught by theatre professionals and teaching artists; to broaden their horizons as people and as artists; and to help our students learn skills that will prove valuable in life, as well as lessons specific to the craft of theatre.


 

Stage a Story
Time:
Fall Session:
Saturdays 9/15 - 11/3/07, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m OR
Mondays 10/15 - 12/3/07, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Winter Session:
Saturdays 1/12 - 3/1/08, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m OR
Mondays 1/21- 3/10/08, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Age: 4 -6 year olds
Description: The class will dramatize a story using movement, voice work, music and games. Along the way, young performers will be exposed to life skills such as concentration, teamwork and self-confidence. Friends and family are invited to share in the fun during the last ten minutes of each class. The eight weeks will conclude with a final presentation

Playing with Shakespeare

Age: 7-9 year olds
Description: Discover the fun in the words and stories of William Shakespeare. Through exercises of sound and movement, improvisation, storytelling and text, students will learn some of the verse and prose that gives life to Will's fairies, villains, great thinkers and princes.

Physical Comedy

Saturdays 9/15 - 11/3/07, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m OR
Mondays 10/15 - 12/3/07, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Winter Session:
Saturdays 1/12 - 3/1/08, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m OR
Mondays 1/21- 3/10/08, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Age: 10-13 year olds
Description: Try your hand, foot, head - your whole self - at learning some of the actor's physical language in comedy. Students will be introduced to form, rhythm, timing, style, warm-ups, pratfalls, double takes, clowing, farce and stage combat.

Acting with a Script
Time:
Fall Session:
Saturdays 9/15 - 11/3/07, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m OR
Mondays 10/15 - 12/3/07, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Winter Session:
Saturdays 1/12 - 3/1/08, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m OR
Mondays 1/21- 3/10/08, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Age: 14-18 year olds
Description: Discover ways to work with scripts in cold readings, auditions and most importantly rehearsals. The class will explore script and character analysis, making choices and how to make the playwright's words your own.
Fee: $200
 
 

*Classes are divided by age rather than by experience level to encourage students to experience theatre training as an ongoing process.  Students are encouraged to take the same level of acting class more than once.  Each time a class is offered, its instructor varies the format to expose students to new and exciting theatre disciplines.
