Summer Youth Workshops

With much consideration for the State of Indiana and City of Indianapolis’ COVID-19 guidelines and the health and well-being of our Workshop attendees, families, staff, and artists, Indiana Repertory Theatre has made the extremely difficult decision to cancel our Summer Youth Workshops this year.

We want to thank you for your continued support of the IRT as we move forward in these unprecedented times.

Frequently Asked Questions about One-Week Programs
More
  • What if I have dates already planned this summer that conflict with these camps?
    • That's OK! Our programs are designed to accommodate busy summer schedules. Just ensure we know about your conflicts in advance, and we can work around them.
  • What is the schedule of payment? Do I have to put down a deposit?
    • At the time of reservation a $100 non-refundable deposit is required. Payment may be made in full or by installment, but the full amount due must be paid by May 22nd, 2020. Please scroll below to see additional information.
  • Are students ages 8-18 in the same class?
    • No. We divide students into three groups for the instructional day - ages 8 - 10, 11 - 12, and 13 - 18. Students may be combined in whole group activities such as warm-ups, performances, or at lunch time.
  • What does a typical day look like at Summer Workshops?
    • Students begin the day with warmups, and transition into a Morning Meeting to go over the day's agenda. From there students begin a rotation around the building, much like a typical school day. The bulk of each day is spent in acting instruction, with the "elective" subject rounding out the instructional day.
  • Where do your instructors come from?
    • Our instructors are working artists and teachers from around central Indiana. Our faculty has been seen working and performing at IRT, the Phoenix Theatre, Dance Kaleidoscope, Civic Theatre and Jr. Civic, Actors Theatre of Indiana, IndyFringe and many more. The combined teaching years among our faculty exceeds 100 years of experience. Your students are in great hands!
  • Do you have camp counselors?
    • Yes! Our Summer Workshops couldn't run without our team of college interns. This team is made up of college students from around Indiana, and sometimes the country, who come to us through contacts in theatre and education departments. Our interns work closely with faculty to monitor students in class and throughout the day.

3-WEEK PROGRAMs

CANCELED ACTING INTENSIVE  |  Ages 8-18
Click to Learn More!
  • WHO: Students ages 8-18 | Prior acting experience recommended.
  • COST: $750

The Acting Intensive is IRT’s highest level of training for young people who are passionate about the performing arts. Acting Intensive provides in-depth training from IRT actors and artists through a variety of specialized classes intended to enhance their acting skills to prepare for their next role. The curriculum will challenge and support each student, while giving them the space to explore within an ensemble. Skill-building classes include movement, improv, design, dance, Shakespeare, and musical theatre.

In addition to class work, students will collaborate to create and stage a final presentation created by the ensemble. This performance will take place on the OneAmerica Mainstage and is open to families and friends.

Because Acting Intensive provides an in-depth experience and requires a summer of collaborative work, we recommend this program for students who have previous theatre experience or have attended previous theatre classes or camps such as: IRT Summer Workshops, Summer Stock Stage, Asante Children’s Theatre Academy, Phoenix Theatre Youth Classes, Jr. Civic Classes, or Young Actors Theatre Classes. Students and parents are encouraged to attend our Acting Intensive Open House to learn more about the program and student expectations.

Our Open House dates will be announced for later on in the school year. If you are interested in being notified when this has been scheduled, please email Sarah Geis, Education Manager, at sgeis@irtlive.com.

What students are saying about IRT's Summer Youth Workshops!

"[These] were two of the best acting instructors I’ve ever had. They were truly able to help me reach the deeper aspects of my character and myself, not just what's on the surface. I really admire them."

”I loved how the activities ... really pushed me out of my comfort zone."

”[The teachers] were awesome and supportive and disciplined and amazing. Definitely changed me as an actress.”

”I would definitely attend again! The environment is so positive and I always learn to do something new each day and my skills become better.”

what parents are saying about irt's summer youth workshops!

"The level of instruction my kids receive and the quality of the staff makes Conservatory an exceptional value. This can't compare to other camps that may be less expensive but are not as professional or immersive for young performers."

"My son talked about camp every day and would randomly act out something he learned. IRT camp has become part of him. Theater, I believe, is his niche and IRT has made him more confident, he has made friends, it has helped his vocabulary and dictation. I truly believe that camp has helped with school as well."

"My daughter clearly enjoyed each day and grew as an actress. She was stretched and challenged to improve her skill set and develop new skills. The learning environment seemed safe, supportive and encouraging and she left very happy and inspired. Heartfelt thanks to your team!"

"My kids couldn't wait to come back to camp every day and even said they looked forward to bedtime because that meant they could come back to the IRT again in the morning!"
