This month the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) hosted a one-day Shakespeare workshop led by Kevin Coleman, founding member and director of education at Shakespeare and Company located in Lenox, Mass.  Professional actors followed Coleman through a series of exercises to engage the mind, voice and body before performing a prepared monologue of the students’ choice.

Artists and attentive observers watched as the actors performed their individual pieces, afterward receiving thoughtful feedback from Coleman who shines as a passionate and knowledgeable Shakespeare coach. The students performed twice, sometimes three times, growing confident and more passionate with each performance.

Coleman emphasized the importance of workshops, particularly as a safe space to explore vulnerability where constructive criticism can help propel one’s artistry.

"Shakespeare and Co is a field leader in its educative approaches to Shakespeare. We were thrilled to have founding member, Kevin Coleman, lead a master class with our local acting community," said IRT Associate Artistic Director, Courtney Sale

Coleman came to the IRT through DePauw University. DePauw Theater has a long history of collaborating with Shakespeare and Co and uses the company's model for the popular Shakespeare in Schools program. Knowing IRT shares a long commitment in exposing Indiana youth to Shakespeare's works, DePauw generously reached out to partner on this master class.
