a revolution in song

The High Priestess of Soul shook the world with her powerful music. In the depths of the Civil Rights struggle, Nina Simone used song as a means of expressing the nation’s anguish—and resilience. This deeply personal play with music imagines a conversation among Simone and three other Black women, showing how the iconic chanteuse forged her true calling—and gave voice to a movement.

Original artwork by Tasha Beckwith

The artwork for the play Nina Simone: Four Women features a striking portrait of Nina Simone, her iconic tall hairstyle creatively intertwines with three silhouettes representing the other three women from her play. The portrait is set within a broken stained glass church window, symbolizing both fragility and resilience. The ornate border frames the image, while a bright yellow background adds a vibrant and hopeful contrast.

Tasha Beckwith hails from the city of Indianapolis, IN, where her artistic journey began to unfold. During her formative years, Tasha immersed herself in the realm of artistic expression, leading her to the distinguished halls of Herron School of Art and Design, from which she proudly graduated in 2006. You can see her public works around town including her mural at Peace Park of the legendary Madame CJ Walker, find her work at the Indianapolis International Airport, Hilton Hotels, Indiana University, and a host of other places. Tasha is also an AIP coin designer at the United States Mint, and continues to create studio works in her free time. tashabeckwith.myportfolio.com
