THE POSITION
IRT’s scene shop is looking for a skilled Carpenter to help build the worlds of our productions. You’ll work in a busy shop alongside an experienced team, building, installing, and striking scenery for six productions a year on two stages. This is a hands-on, craft-focused role in a professional theatre housed in one of downtown Indianapolis’s most beloved buildings. The season runs from August through April, with repertoire ranging from world premieres to classics.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Build, install, and strike scenery for all IRT productions, including special projects
- Work from designer and construction drawings, using woodworking and metalworking tools (including welders) and finish carpentry techniques like molding and trim
- Help with theatrical rigging, following best practices for rigging safety
- Help locate, order, and pick up materials and equipment for the shop
- Help keep the Scene Shop, Paint Shop, and performance spaces safe, clean, and organized
- Cover run crew in a pinch, and pick up other projects as they come up
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- 2–4 years of experience with scenery construction and woodworking tools
- Experience with finish carpentry, including molding and trim
- Comfort with metalworking tools, including welders
- Familiarity with theatrical rigging and rigging safety best practices
- Ability to read designer and construction drawings
- A collaborative, positive approach to working in a build environment with other members of the team and overhire
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as production schedules require
This is a physically active role. You’ll be on your feet for much of the day, operating power tools, lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and personnel lifts, occasionally working in confined spaces or in darkened performance spaces, and stooping, kneeling, or crouching as the work requires. THE POSITION
IRT’s scene shop is looking for a Lead Carpenter to supervise all staff carpenters and overhire personnel during construction, load-ins, and strikes. Working closely with the Technical Director, you’ll supervise staff carpenters and overhire through build, load-in, and strike, and help keep six productions a year moving through the shop. This is a hands-on leadership role in a professional theatre housed in one of downtown Indianapolis’s most beloved buildings. The season runs from August through April, with repertoire ranging from world premieres to classics.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Serve as floor supervisor for staff carpenters and overhire through build, load-in, and strike
- Partner with the Technical Director to keep work flowing smoothly through the shop
- Help onboard new shop staff and overhire; be a day-to-day resource on shop policies, methods, and construction standards
- Call breaks and set appropriate end-of-day and end-of-week cleanup time
- Build scenery alongside the team for all IRT productions and special projects
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- 3–5 years of experience with scenery construction and woodworking tools
- 3–5 years of experience with metalworking tools, including welders
- 3–5 years of experience with theatrical rigging and rigging safety best practices
- Experience supervising multiple crews working on different projects at the same time
- Comfort running a shared Scene Shop and performance space safely
- Ability to read designer and construction drawings
- A clear communicator who can manage people and keep a team pulling in the same direction
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as production schedules require

THE POSITION
IRT’s costume shop is looking for a skilled Stitcher/First Hand. Working alongside four other full-time seasonal team members, you’ll cut patterns, build garments, attend fittings, and carry designs from sketch to stage. This is a hands-on, craft-focused role in a professional shop housed in one of downtown Indianapolis’s most beloved buildings. The season runs from August to April, with six productions, new plays to classics.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Cut fabric and make patterns for facings and linings from Draper-supplied patterns
- Perform sewing duties as assigned; maintain integrity of the costume design through the Draper’s interpretation
- Attend fittings, take notes, and track alterations through tech and run of show
- Maintain your work area (sewing machinery, cutting table, and supplies) to keep the shop moving
- Communicate supply and fabric needs proactively; maintain inventory
- Participate in weekly shop meetings and collaborate with wardrobe and the broader production team
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Experience in a professional costume shop, or a degree in costume technology
- Comfort with pattern cutting and fabric manipulation
- Proficiency with standard costume shop machinery
- A collaborative, positive approach to working in a shop environment
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as production schedules require
This is a physically active role. You’ll be on your feet for much of the day, operating machinery, occasionally climbing stairs or loading and unloading costume elements, and lifting up to 25 lbs. We will make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
