strong and sassy
Before it was a movie, this pop culture favorite was an off-Broadway hit. With sharp, witty banter and memorable one-liners, six women from all walks of life celebrate the everyday joys and tears of small-town living while gathered at their favorite hair salon. When tragedy strikes, the play reveals the steely bonds of compassion and love that hold true friends together.
APPROXIMATE RUN TIME: 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
Steel Magnolias contains adult language and situations. Recommended for patrons 9th grade and above.
Health & Safety Guidelines:
All IRT patrons attending public performances must show a photo ID and proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test (administered no more than 72 hours prior to the performance), in addition to wearing a mask. By purchasing a ticket, you acknowledge and agree to comply with the terms of our policies. Please see our full Health & Safety information and policies on our FAQs page.
For Steel Magnolias only, we will allow concessions in the Theatre, and the balcony seating area will now be a mask-optional area. We will still require masks in the main level of Theatre seating, as well as anytime patrons are in the public Theatre spaces. We ask that all patrons on the main level still use their masks when not actively eating or drinking. We are changing our balcony seating area to be mask-optional since this area is farther away from the stage.
Artistic Note:
“Now more than ever, we need a good laugh, right? Our season closer, Steel Magnolias, offers plenty of those, plus some good, healthy, cleansing tears. The women who gather at Truvy’s beauty shop bond over a lot more than cuts and curls; they create a tight-knit family of many colors that gets them through everything from weddings to funerals. Steel Magnolias reminds us how friendship and community help us survive the hardest challenges that life can throw at us. For a play written in 1987, that sounds an awful lot like today, doesn’t it?” – Richard J. Roberts, IRT’s Resident Dramaturg
